Traditional Pre-School

Early Childhood Educators at the JCYS Northwest Family Center are concerned with all aspects of a child's development: intellectual, social, emotional, and physical. Our curriculum places emphasis on learning through play, which is the way children best develop skills in all these areas.

Our developmentally appropriate play-based curriculum helps children build solid foundations, encourages their creativity and imagination, and fosters healthy self-esteem, good social skills and the love of learning, all of which help children succeed in school and in life. As an agency committed to children, the goal of our center is a place in which they are treated with respect and love in an educational environment, which is challenging, creative, exciting, and fun. A place in which children would gladly spend time!

To promote learning, our curriculum is based on a unifying theme, which serves to help children focus on specific concepts and provides a sense of integration. Therefore, another important element of our program is structured group time for stories, singing, language development, science and cooking activities. Children come to school each day with a variety of previous experiences. We focus on maintaining an open and flexible curriculum for each child to build on and grow according to his or her own unique conceptual level.

All rooms participate in a Jewish holiday curriculum which aims at helping children appreciate Jewish culture and identity. Jewish holidays and customs are explored from a cultural point of view through music, stories, art, games, and cooking activities. Classrooms that meet on Friday celebrate Shabbat with blessings, songs, and a special snack of juice and challah. In addition to the Jewish holidays, the following of basic Jewish values are implemented throughout the entire curriculum: family, caring about others, acceptance of all, tzedakah, education, and the environment.

At the JCYS Northwest Family Center, we believe that all children are special, and therefore, we do not exclude any child from our program based on ability or need. As part of our mission statement, Jewish Council for Youth Services, "is dedicated to serving the developmental needs of Jewish children, their families and the greater community.
